Benefits of Laser Scar Treatment and Scar Removal at Sydney Medical Cosmetics

If you have visible scars, you’re all too aware of how they can affect your looks and self-confidence. The good news is that although most scars are permanent, there are things you can do to significantly reduce their appearance, giving you clearer, more youthful-looking skin.

Laser scar treatment is a non-surgical procedure used to resurface and improve the appearance of the skin. It works by utilising concentrated beams of light to penetrate the areas of skin that need improvement. This technique can remove or dramatically reduce wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and scars.

How Laser Scar Removal Works

Laser skin resurfacing heats the layers of the skin, including the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (underneath layer). This encourages the body’s natural healing processes to activate. One of the things the body produces to heal the skin is collagen, which is necessary for healthy, soft skin. The damaged top layer of skin falls away, and the new, fresh skin underneath is revealed.

Because this procedure causes new cells to grow, it also has a rejuvenating effect on the skin. Scar tissue is often located on the skin’s outer layer, which means that its visibility can be significantly diminished as the skin heals after laser treatment. When the scar tissue occupies more than just the epidermis, multiple treatments may be needed to achieve optimal results.

Convenient, Fast Treatment

Laser scar treatments do not require a hospital stay or significant downtime, and treatment sessions are relatively brief, taking an hour or two at the most. The practitioner passes the handheld laser wand over the scarred area of the skin, with each pass removing more damaged skin cells. There are a few different types of lasers used depending on the severity of the scarred area. These include the erbium laser, which is used to treat minor scarring on the skin’s surface, and the CO2 laser used to reach the deeper skin layers to treat more severe scars. The CO2 laser requires a local anaesthetic and a couple weeks’ recovery time. Either way, once the procedure is complete, the treated area will be bandaged as necessary, and your practitioner will recommend an ointment to keep the area moisturised and prevent scabs from forming.
