PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY

Our Géniale Skin Cancer doctors have over two decades of experience in medicine and surgery. Our centre is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and our team is highly skilled in the latest, most innovative procedures.

ALA PDT (APL)

ALA-PDT Treatment (APL) is an effective treatment for sun damaged and aged skin. The treatment is performed by a Géniale skin doctor.

The procedure involves the use of a photosynthesising agent applied directly to the skin. After 5 hours of incubation, the PDT is applied to activate ALA within the cells to release singlet oxygen species. Sun damaged cells are more vulnerable and will absorb more ALA. Finally, an Aktilite® lamp is used at the end of treatment to ensure no light–sensitive ALA is present.

The treatment simultaneously improves the appearance and texture of sun damaged skin – Reducing redness, pigmentation, roughness and improving skin texture. It can also reduce need for future treatment of sun damaged skin and potentially prevent the development of skin cancers.

ALA PDT allows large areas to be treated in one session such as the entire face, scalp, hands or forearms, enabling superior medical and aesthetic results.

METVIX PDT

Metvix® Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for various pre-cancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis/solar keratosis) or certain types of non-melanoma skin cancers (Basal cell carcinoma and Bowen’s disease).

Metvix PDT is performed by a Géniale skin doctor and involves a process of removing uneven areas of surface skin, applying a Metvix cream to the lesion and surrounding area for 3 hours, then exposing the treatment area to an Aktilite lamp for 7 to 9 minutes. Abnormal cells in the lesions absorb the active ingredient from the Metvix cream. When exposed to the Aktilite® lamp, a chemical reaction destroys the lesion. Healthy skin surrounding the lesion is left unaffected, resulting in a superior cosmetic outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions about PDT Treatment

What is the typical recovery time after PDT?

Recovery time varies, but for skin conditions, expect redness and swelling to resolve within a week. Deeper treatments may require a longer recovery. Follow your healthcare provider’s post-treatment care instructions for optimal healing.

Can PDT be used for all types of cancer?

PDT is effective for certain types of cancer, primarily those that are on or near the surface of the skin or lining of organs.

How many PDT sessions are needed?

The number of sessions depends on the specific condition and its severity. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate treatment plan. At Geniale, we generally recommend two sessions.

Are there any side effects of PDT?

Side effects may include redness, swelling, and temporary sensitivity to light. Discuss potential side effects with your healthcare provider.

Is PDT painful?

Patients may experience some discomfort during the light exposure, but anesthesia or numbing agents are often used to minimise pain.

How long does a PDT session take?

Our PDT treatment requires a 20-minute appointment for the application of the Metvix cream. You will be required to return (three) 3 hours later for the use of the Light Laser treatment.

Is PDT safe?

PDT is generally considered safe, with minimal side effects. However, it is essential to discuss potential risks with your healthcare provider.

What conditions can PDT treat?

PDT is used for skin cancers, pre-cancerous skin lesions, acne, and certain types of cancer, including esophageal and lung cancer.

How does Photodynamic Therapy work?

A photosensitising drug is applied, and when exposed to specific light, it activates, producing a reaction that can destroy abnormal cells or treat certain medical conditions.

What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

PDT is a medical treatment that uses light-activated drugs to target and treat various conditions, including cancer and skin disorders.
