Comparing Snoring Treatment Options: Lifestyle, Oral Appliances, CPAP, Laser and Surgery

Snoring can have more than one cause, and the most appropriate management depends on the individual. Some people who snore may also have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which requires medical assessment and may need a sleep study or specialist review.

Start with the cause, not the treatment

A useful first step is to consider whether snoring is occurring on its own or alongside symptoms that may suggest OSA, such as witnessed pauses in breathing, waking gasping or choking, marked daytime sleepiness, or unrefreshing sleep. If these symptoms are present, medical assessment should come before choosing a treatment.

Lifestyle and positional measures

Depending on the cause of snoring, measures such as reducing alcohol close to bedtime, weight management where relevant, treating nasal obstruction, stopping smoking, or avoiding sleeping on the back may help some people.

Oral appliances

Mandibular advancement devices are custom-fitted dental appliances that move the lower jaw forward during sleep. They may be considered for snoring and for some people with mild to moderate OSA. Suitability should be discussed with an appropriately qualified clinician and dentist.

CPAP

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is commonly used for moderate to severe OSA. It works by helping keep the airway open during sleep. CPAP is a treatment for sleep apnoea rather than a cosmetic or convenience alternative to snoring treatment.

Laser-based snoring treatment

Laser-based approaches may be considered for selected patients with snoring after assessment of symptoms, airway anatomy, medical history and possible sleep-apnoea risk. At Géniale, NightLase® may be discussed as one option where clinically appropriate. Results and suitability vary, and laser treatment is not a substitute for diagnosis or management of OSA.

ENT and surgical pathways

ENT review or surgery may be appropriate where there is a structural obstruction or where other treatment pathways have not been suitable or effective. The appropriate pathway depends on the underlying cause and clinical assessment.

How Géniale approaches snoring consultations

Géniale provides snoring consultations in Sydney and Melbourne. The consultation considers snoring history, airway and throat anatomy, medical history, sleep quality, possible OSA risk factors, previous treatments, risks, limitations and alternatives. If symptoms suggest possible sleep apnoea, further assessment or referral may be recommended before treatment is considered.
