Liposuction is most effective when used for stubborn areas of fat that exercise or diet can’t help. It involves removing fat through small incisions in the target area to give a more aesthetically pleasing look. As the world’s most common plastic surgery procedure there are misconceptions surrounding liposuction, and it is important that it isn’t mistaken for a weight loss tool — liposuction is most effective when patients are near their goal weight.
If you come to Géniale for a liposuction procedure you’ll be in the incredible hands of Dr. Bill Lyon. An Australian born and trained cosmetic surgeon, he has trained at Flinders University, undertaken extensive surgical training throughout both Australia and England, won numerous prizes and scholarships for both clinic and research work, and has numerous publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Lyon has also travelled to both Rwanda and Fiji as a part of the Open Heart International humanitarian agency. Dr Lyon’s gentle and caring approach will provide you with an honest opinion regarding your suitability for liposuction, with your safety and wellbeing at the core of every decision.
DO I NEED A CONSULTATION FIRST?
Here at Géniale, we will take the time to discuss a holistic approach to your goals for reshaping your body. A preliminary consultation is encouraged so you can get to know our team, and so that our resident liposuction specialist Dr. Bill Lyon can assess the proportions of your entire body to ensure your results are as natural as possible.
HOW IS THE TREATMENT CARRIED OUT?
Most liposuction procedures are performed as a day procedure, either in a clinic operating theatre or day hospital. However, depending on the patient, Dr Bill Lyon may suggest an overnight stay is required. The liposuction procedure involves inserting a cannula via tiny incisions, which are then worked underneath the skin into the deeper layers of fat, effectively breaking up the fat and suctioning it out through a vacuum-like device. The isolated area of excess fat is then artfully removed to leave behind an aesthetically defined contour — this is why some plastic surgeons refer to liposuction as “liposculpture.” Additional processes such as ultrasound, VASER® or SAFELipo® may be implemented to assist in rupturing the fat cells and to tighten the overlying skin. If there are areas of volume deficiency, a fat transfer can be performed to create greater symmetry.
While all of our surgeons are highly trained to ensure that any undesirable side effects are minimal, there are still inherent risks associated with this procedure:
This surgery requires anaesthetic, which has its own risks associated with it. Dr. Lyon will discuss these with you during one of your consultations.
Change in skin sensation that may persist
Damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs and abdominal organs
Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
Excess fluid accumulation under the skin around the operated site that may require one or more drainage procedures with a needle
Irregular contours or asymmetries
Need for revision surgery
Poor wound healing
Rippling or loose skin, worsening of cellulite
Thermal burn or heat injury from ultrasound with the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty technique
$3500 (one area) / $2000 (extra area)
Is it right for me?
We understand how difficult the decision is to undergo any medical procedure. During your preliminary consultation we will assess your suitability for a liposuction procedure, and discuss with you how best to achieve your desired result.
How long is the recovery time?
You should expect some discomfort after the liposuction procedure however Dr Bill Lyon will provide you with medication to help alleviate this. You are advised to have at least five days off work, and can start regular, gentle exercise within this time frame if you feel able as this will help with skin retraction.
Will there be any scarring?
Scars with liposuction can occur, however, because the incisions made during the procedure are so small the scarring, it if occurs, is very minimal. In most cases these scars fade significantly a few months after the procedure. As liposuction can be performed in many different areas of the body, Dr. Lyon will discuss with you the scarring risks associated with the particular location you are looking to alter.
Will I need anaesthetic?
General anaesthesia is a requirement for a liposuction procedure. While the risks of modern anaesthetic are low they are still present. The doctor will discuss these with you prior to the procedure.
Will other medications affect results?
Our Géniale doctors will enquire into any medications you are taking during your consultation. Depending on the medication these may need to be halted leading up to the surgery.
How long does the procedure take?
The duration of a liposuction procedure is dependent on the number of areas being treated, the type of anaesthetic being used, and how much fat is being removed from target areas. While the average procedure can last anywhere between two and seven hours, we will be able to give you a more accurate estimate after a preliminary consultation.
